Sydney, May 21 : Andrew McDonald, the coach of the Australian cricket team, revealed on Tuesday that the addition of young batter Jake Fraser-McGurk and all-rounder Matthew Short as travelling reserves for the T20 World Cup in the Americas stems from their unique contributions to the squad.
Fraser-McGurk, 22, who impressed during his debut IPL season with the Delhi Capitals, showcased explosive batsmanship, amassing 330 runs in nine games at a remarkable strike rate of over 234, which included four half-centuries. Despite calls for his inclusion in the 15-member squad for the World Cup in the West Indies and USA, Fraser-McGurk was initially overlooked but has now been added as a travelling reserve.
Speaking to Sen Radio, McDonald highlighted the distinct qualities of Fraser-McGurk and Short. He emphasized Fraser-McGurk’s proficiency as an opener and Short’s versatility as a middle-order batsman with spin bowling capabilities, suggesting Short could serve as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell in case of injury.
While both reserves are unlikely to play unless a squad member is injured, McDonald expressed confidence in their abilities and noted that they provide valuable backup options. He also mentioned other alternatives, such as Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett, currently playing in the UK, who could step in if needed due to injuries.
Regarding opener David Warner’s fitness, McDonald reassured that the 37-year-old is in good health, dispelling concerns about his availability for the tournament.
Australia’s campaign in the T20 World Cup kicks off with their opening group stage match against Oman in Barbados on June 6.
