New Delhi : On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sadness over the loss of lives and the extensive damage caused by the earthquake in Nepal. He extended India’s unwavering support to Nepal and offered all possible assistance. In a statement, PM Modi conveyed, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives and damage due to the earthquake in Nepal. India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and is ready to extend all possible assistance. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families, and we wish the injured a quick recovery.”
This statement came in the wake of a devastating earthquake that struck Nepal, resulting in the tragic loss of 128 lives and leaving at least 141 people injured. The earthquake, measuring 6.4 in magnitude, struck Nepal late on Friday, as reported by The Kathmandu Post. Nepal’s Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ has departed for the affected areas to oversee relief and rescue efforts.
The most significant damage was reported in Jajarkot and West Rukum, with Jajarkot suffering the highest number of casualties, as indicated by Deputy Superintendent of Police Santosh Roka. In Jajarkot, 92 lives were lost, including that of Nalgad Municipality Deputy Mayor Sarita Singh. Additionally, 44 individuals perished, and 70 sustained injuries in the Ramidanda area of Barekot Rural Municipality.
In West Rukum, the death toll reached 36, with 36 fatalities in Aathbiskot Municipality and eight in Sanibheri Rural Municipality. A total of 85 people were injured in West Rukum, with preparations underway to air-evacuate one severely injured individual while others receive treatment at local medical facilities.
The earthquake’s impact was severe in Bheri, Nalgad, Kushe, Barekot, and Chedagad areas of Jajarkot district, prompting a robust search and rescue operation involving all security forces. Several hospitals, including Bheri Hospital, Kohalpur Medical College, Nepalgunj Military Hospital, and Police Hospital, have been designated for treating the injured. All Nepalese helicopter operators have been placed on standby, regular flights have been canceled, and injured individuals are being evacuated from the affected areas to other regions.
In response to the earthquake, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” expressed his condolences over the loss of lives and the damage incurred. He mobilized all three security agencies for the immediate rescue and relief efforts. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter Scale and an epicenter in Nepal at a depth of 10 km, also triggered tremors in various parts of North India, including Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.
