KOLKATA, November 4: India’s hopes in the ongoing Cricket World Cup took a significant hit as star all-rounder Hardik Pandya was ruled out of the tournament. Pandya sustained an injury to his left ankle while bowling during India’s World Cup match against Bangladesh in Pune.
Unfortunately, the 30-year-old cricketer was unable to recover in time for further participation in the World Cup, according to an announcement from the International Cricket Council (ICC). As a result, he will miss the remainder of the tournament.
To fill the void left by Pandya’s absence, Prasidh Krishna, a fast bowler, has been named as his replacement. The decision was approved by the tournament’s Event Technical Committee on Saturday.
Krishna has limited experience in white-ball cricket, with only 19 appearances for India. He was last seen on the international stage just before the World Cup when he claimed the valuable wicket of David Warner, recording figures of 1/45 from nine overs against Australia.
While Krishna has displayed promise in the past with 33 international wickets, he faces competition from the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj for a place in India’s pace attack.
With the approval of India’s replacement player by the Event Technical Committee on Saturday, Prasidh Krishna is eligible for selection in India’s squad for the crucial World Cup clash against South Africa on Sunday.
Currently, India and South Africa hold the top two positions in the World Cup standings. The winner of the upcoming match in Kolkata will have a strong chance of finishing the group stage at the tournament’s pinnacle.
