India Upgrades Kabul Mission to Embassy: Jaishankar Praises Taliban

India announced on Friday the elevation of its technical mission in Kabul to a full-fledged embassy. This significant transformation reflects India’s renewed diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan and comes as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi.

In August 2021, India withdrew all officials from its embassy following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. However, a technical team was redeployed in June 2022 to resume limited operations. The recent upgrade signifies India’s commitment to enhancing cooperation on humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and regional security.

Jaishankar stated, “Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan.” He emphasized India’s deep concern for Afghanistan’s development, highlighting the historic partnership that has facilitated several major projects in the region.

In addition to expressing India’s goodwill, Jaishankar appreciated the Taliban’s sensitivity to India’s security concerns, especially in light of previous incidents like the Pahalgam terror attack. He underscored the shared commitment of both nations toward stability and prosperity, despite the persistent threat of cross-border terrorism. “We must coordinate efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” he affirmed.

Echoing Jaishankar’s sentiments, Amir Khan Muttaqi acknowledged India’s role as a crucial regional partner that has consistently supported the Afghan populace. He expressed gratitude for India’s ongoing humanitarian assistance and reiterated Kabul’s intention to strengthen cooperation in several sectors, including trade, infrastructure, and education.

The upgrade of India’s diplomatic mission provides a cautious yet strategic re-engagement with the Taliban-led government. This move, driven by a combination of security interests and longstanding ties with the Afghan people, underscores India’s commitment to ensuring regional stability.

As India continues to navigate the complexities of its relationship with Afghanistan post-Taliban takeover, this diplomatic upgrade represents a significant step towards fostering a secure and prosperous environment in the region. With an increasing focus on humanitarian and infrastructural efforts, India looks to bolster its influence while ensuring the safety and progress of its Afghan neighbors.
