Jaishankar Urges Stronger Global South Solidarity for UN Reform

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the need for enhanced solidarity among Global South nations during a significant meeting on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. His remarks on Tuesday resonated with the prevailing sentiment for a collective push towards reforming global institutions like the United Nations.

Jaishankar’s appeal for strengthened multilateralism comes amidst escalating global challenges and risks. In a post shared on X, he stated, “it is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions.” This sentiment sets the stage for a unified response to pressing international concerns from developing nations.

During the high-level meeting, the minister outlined a structured approach to enhance the Global South’s engagement in world affairs. He proposed five key measures aimed at amplifying the collective voice and influence of developing nations on the global stage.

He stressed the significance of existing forums to bolster consultations among Global South countries. This approach fosters solidarity and promotes collaboration, creating a platform where voices of developing nations can unite for common goals.

Additionally, Jaishankar highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive reform of the United Nations and multilateral processes. He noted, “The Global South must bring its specific strengths, experiences, and achievements to the international stage.” He referenced vital areas such as vaccines, digital capabilities, education, agro-practices, and the promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as examples that could significantly benefit fellow nations.

Moreover, the minister called for an equitable approach to pressing global challenges like climate change. He urged Global South nations to establish initiatives that reflect their unique interests instead of merely aligning with the priorities of the Global North.

Jaishankar’s call for collective actions also extends to discussions on emerging technologies, notably artificial intelligence. He noted the importance of ensuring developing countries are not marginalized in the rapidly evolving global landscape.

India’s role as a champion for the Global South has become increasingly prominent in international forums. The country remains committed to ensuring that developing nations play a meaningful role in shaping the global agenda, driven by a shared understanding of equity and justice.

As the world grapples with interconnected crises, Jaishankar’s initiatives could pave the way for a more inclusive and representative international environment.
