The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday declined to entertain an urgent plea regarding police actions taken against student protesters during a demonstration by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar. This protest centered around allegations of a leak involving the NEET-UG 2026 exam paper.
The plea reached the Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, where the petitioner’s counsel urged the court for a quick hearing. The Chief Justice, however, responded assertively, stating, “Don’t waste our time, and don’t waste your time.”
The lawyer representing the students highlighted that the demonstrations addressed important public concerns, such as the alleged NEET-UG paper leak, examination conduct, and necessary reforms for the National Testing Agency (NTA).
When videos allegedly showcasing police actions against the protesters were mentioned, Chief Justice Kant reiterated, “We are not interested in videos; we don’t have time to watch.” This clear dismissal underscored the court’s current unwillingness to engage in urgent hearings related to this matter.
Importantly, this courtroom development follows a similar refusal by the Delhi High Court to consider the request for an urgent hearing regarding police actions during the protests.
The ongoing protests organized by the CJP have escalated in response to the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. Protesters demand accountability, including the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and significant reforms in the examination process.
The situation has notably intensified, with demonstrators marching towards the Parliament. Reports indicate clashes between protesters and police, raising accusations of excessive force and resulting in multiple detentions.
The Supreme Court’s observations were strictly related to the request for an urgent hearing. This did not translate into any ruling addressing the substance of the allegations brought forth in the petition.
