Kashmir Dry Spell Ending: Rain and Snow Forecast Soon

The prolonged dry spell in Kashmir is set to end on the eve of Chille Kalan, with the Meteorological Department forecasting snowfall over higher reaches and rain in the plains after nearly two weeks of mostly dry weather. This transition comes as the region anticipates significant changes in weather patterns.

An official from the Meteorological Department (MeT) reported that weather conditions from December 18 to 19 will remain partly to generally cloudy, with the possibility of very light snowfall at isolated higher reaches of North and Central Kashmir. The MeT predicts a more active western disturbance moving in late on December 20, which will trigger a series of weather changes.

“The active western disturbance will impact our region starting late on December 20 to December 21. Expect light to moderate snowfall over higher reaches and light to moderate rain in several areas across Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.

The forecast indicates December 22 will bring generally cloudy weather, accompanied by light rain or snowfall at scattered locations. From December 23 to 29, Kashmir is likely to experience continued cloudy conditions, with light snowfall possible at isolated higher reaches on December 30 and 31.

Snowfall Advisory and Travel Precautions

The MeT Department has also issued a snowfall advisory for those traveling in the region. Some higher reaches in Kupwara, Bandipora, and Ganderbal districts may face moderate to heavy snowfall, especially noted for December 21.

“We advise travelers and transporters to plan their journeys carefully and adhere to traffic and administrative advisories,” the department stated, underscoring the importance of safety during the expected weather changes.

Meanwhile, temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir have been above normal in several areas. Srinagar registered a maximum of 10.6°C, which is around 1.2°C above average, with a minimum temperature of 0.2°C. Gulmarg observed a maximum temperature of 8.8°C, nearly 4°C above normal, while the minimum settled at 1.6°C.

In north Kashmir, Kupwara reported a maximum of 10.8°C and a minimum of -1.0°C. Other locations like Pahalgam and Qazigund recorded maximums of 11.2°C and 13.0°C, respectively, showcasing a notable rise in temperatures. Meanwhile, Jammu city reported a maximum of 22.3°C with a minimum of 11.0°C.

The MeT Department confirmed no rainfall recorded at any station in the past 24 hours, but this is expected to change shortly as the weather system approaches. This upcoming snowfall is crucial, as it marks the onset of Chille Kalan, traditionally the harshest part of winter for Kashmir.
