Jammu Advances Towards Inclusive Development Under Omar Abdullah

Former Chief Minister and National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah announced that Jammu is moving towards inclusive and sustainable development under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. This statement came during his interaction with a National Conference delegation today.

Dr Abdullah emphasized that the government has restored public confidence in democratic processes, ensuring that the corridors of power are accessible to ordinary citizens. His remarks underscore a significant change from previous administrations that he claimed delivered only empty promises.

The delegation discussed various long-standing public grievances, attributing their accumulation to what they termed the misrule of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the past decade. They appreciated the initiatives undertaken by the Omar Abdullah government aimed at correcting longstanding issues and fostering development.

Addressing party organizational matters, Dr Abdullah noted that the National Conference is acutely aware of the hardships faced by citizens due to years of undemocratic governance. He stressed, “The Omar Abdullah-led government is making rapid strides to restore people’s faith in democratic institutions.”

Speaking on the often-publicized Smart City project, Dr Abdullah remarked that recent rains and resultant waterlogging revealed gaps in the project’s claims, highlighting the need for genuine development efforts.

During his address, Dr Farooq Abdullah outlined significant government initiatives including plans to protect and restore the historic Mubarak Mandi heritage complex, which has suffered from neglect. He noted tangible benefits arising from recent policy changes, such as free transport for women, additional ration quotas aiding low-income households, and the revival of the Darbar Move that invigorates economic activity in Jammu.

The former Chief Minister also introduced ongoing and proposed projects like ropeways, riverside development, and new lakes in Jammu city, all aimed at establishing Jammu as a key player on the national tourism stage.

Dr Abdullah urged party workers to gear up for the upcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) and Panchayat elections. He stressed the importance of engaging young people, particularly women, to ensure that local governance aligns with their aspirations.

In a related initiative, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed the need for scientific research to analyze the impacts of climate change and reservation policies on the Gujjar-Bakerwal community. Speaking at the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust (GDCT) in Jammu, he emphasized that such studies could inform effective future policies.

Omar Abdullah praised the community’s potential, stating, “There is no dearth of talent in Gujjar institutions. If this talent is channeled into research on climate change, it will strengthen the community.” He highlighted how the nomadic lifestyle of the Gujjar-Bakerwal community faces significant challenges due to climate change.

The Chief Minister also called for enhanced educational initiatives, including better facilities at Gujjar hostels, schools, and mobile schools, while suggesting an objective assessment of the benefits of reservation policies. “We have spoken about reservation for years, but serious studies on its real benefits are still lacking,” he asserted.

Dr Farooq Abdullah reinforced the importance of education in his address, urging the community to remain united and prioritize educational attainment. “Education is key to securing the future of the upcoming generations,” he declared.

The occasion saw the presence of several ministers, MLAs, former ministers, senior advocates, civil society members, and representatives of the Gujjar community, all committed to fostering a brighter future for Jammu through informed governance and community engagement.
