JKPCC Chief Tariq Hameed Karra Calls for Judicial Probe into Leh Violence
Tariq Hameed Karra, JKPCC President, demands a judicial probe into the Leh violence that resulted in four deaths. He insists on a High Court judge or a credible retired judge for the inquiry.

The President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, Tariq Hameed Karra, has called for a thorough judicial probe into the tragic Leh violence on September 24, which claimed four lives. He emphasized that the investigation should ideally be conducted by a sitting High Court judge or, if that is not feasible, by a retired judge of high integrity.
Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, Karra stated, “Whatever happened in Leh should not be repeated, but there must be an inquiry. If a sitting High Court judge is not available on fast track, then the probe should be entrusted to a credible retired judge.” His demand reflects the growing concern over the need for accountability in the handling of law and order situations within the region.
In a symbolic gesture, Karra paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries, stating that their leadership and values continue to inspire the nation. He remarked on the enduring influence of Gandhian philosophy, noting its recognition at international forums such as the United Nations.
Addressing the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections, Karra pointed out that the decisions regarding seat sharing and alliances will rest with the central leadership of the Congress party. He mentioned that senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh has been designated as the observer to oversee the process.
Karra also raised concerns regarding Independent legislator Mehraj Malik, advocating for his right to participate in the Assembly sessions. He argued, “Even Engineer Rashid was allowed to participate in Parliament while lodged in Tihar Jail. By the same analogy, Mehraj Malik should also be allowed.” This statement highlights the insistence on fair treatment for all legislators, regardless of their political status.
The demand for a judicial inquiry into the Leh violence underscores the need for justice and transparency in the region. Citizens and political leaders alike express their concerns over escalating tensions and the handling of violence in the area. Karra’s call reflects a broader demand for a systematic approach to restore order and trust in governance.
Amidst this backdrop, political observers note that the call for a judicial probe by Karra may resonate with a populace eager for justice and accountability. As tensions in the region continue to rise, the importance of impartial investigations cannot be overstated, providing a pathway toward healing and reconciliation.
