PM Modi Celebrates RSS Centenary with Coin and Stamp Release

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during its centenary celebrations on Wednesday in New Delhi, highlighting the organization’s commitment to the principle of ‘nation first.’ Despite enduring numerous challenges and attacks over the years, Modi recognized the RSS’s significant contributions to India’s societal fabric.

Addressing the participants, Modi commended the Sangh’s relentless dedication to nation-building and its efforts to foster harmony amidst caste and creed divisions. He stated, “The Sangh has fought against British atrocities, provided shelter to freedom fighters, and its founder Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar endured imprisonment multiple times during the struggle for independence.”

The Prime Minister reflected on the hardships faced by the RSS, including bans and false accusations, but he praised their unwavering spirit: “The RSS has never harbored bitterness.” He quoted former RSS chief Madhav Golwalkar, who had once remarked, “At times, the tongue may get caught under the teeth, but we do not break the teeth.”

Highlighting the resilience of the Sangh, particularly during the Emergency period, Modi emphasized their steadfast faith in democracy. “Two core values – oneness with society and faith in constitutional institutions – have kept swayamsevaks composed in every crisis,” he asserted, underlining their commitment to democratic principles.

In a historic tribute, Modi unveiled a special ₹100 commemorative coin and a postal stamp to mark the occasion. The coin features the national emblem on one side and, for the first time in independent India, Bharat Mata depicted in Varada Mudra, with a lion and swayamsevaks bowing in reverence. Furthermore, the postal stamp illustrates the RSS’s involvement in the 1963 Republic Day Parade.

“This is a moment of great pride as Bharat Mata has been featured on Indian currency for the first time,” Modi proclaimed, expressing national pride over the representation of Bharat Mata. The presentation of these items signifies the deep-rooted history of the RSS and its impact on Indian society.

Modi recognized the RSS’s pivotal role in various historical events, including the 1962 war, the 1971 refugee crisis, and the 1984 riots. He praised the Sangh’s enduring commitment to equality, compassion, and unity, asserting its significant role in social harmony. The Prime Minister lauded current Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat’s call for “one well, one temple, one cremation ground,” framing it as a vital initiative aimed at dismantling discrimination.

In response to the Prime Minister’s acknowledgments, RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale expressed gratitude towards the government for recognizing the Sangh’s century-long service. He characterized the release of the commemorative coin and stamp as a heartfelt tribute to the selfless dedication exhibited by swayamsevaks since the organization’s inception in 1925.

This centenary celebration reflects not only on the history of the RSS but also on its continued relevance in contemporary India. The emphasis on unity and social service remains pivotal as the nation progresses towards its future.
