Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) President and former Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah, criticized the BJP-led Central Government on Thursday, urging it to learn from the recent violent unrest in Leh, Ladakh. This unrest stemmed from long-standing demands for statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule.
During a press conference, Abdullah attributed the violence to public frustration over unfulfilled promises, emphasizing the need for the government to listen to the voices of the people. “The assurances made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir about statehood remain unmet,” he stated, marking the issues in Ladakh as a result of slow governmental responses.
He underscored that the unrest reflects local grievances rather than external influences. Abdullah highlighted notable peaceful protests, including a hunger strike and a barefoot march from Leh to Delhi led by environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk. Such efforts signify the people’s strong commitment to addressing their demands through peaceful means.
Abdullah warned of increased risks in border regions like Ladakh, especially in the face of China’s destabilization efforts. He called upon the Centre to initiate sincere discussions with the people of Ladakh to address their aspirations and prevent further escalation of unrest.
The violence resulted in four deaths and injuries to over 80 individuals, including police personnel. The protests led to the torching of the BJP office, police vehicles, and other establishments, prompting law enforcement to respond with tear gas and live fire.
Abdullah’s remarks resonate with a broader sentiment among residents of Ladakh, who have been vocal about their desire for enhanced political rights and recognition. The recent turmoil starkly illustrates the urgent need for the government to revisit its policies regarding statehood and local governance, crucially impacting the lives of those in Jammu and Kashmir.
