DRDO Launches Agni-Prime Missile from Rail-Based System
In a landmark achievement, DRDO successfully launched the Agni-Prime missile from a rail-based mobile launcher, enhancing India’s strategic capabilities significantly.

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), successfully launched the Agni-Prime missile from a rail-based mobile launcher on Tuesday. This launch showcases India’s commitment to advancing its defense technology.
The Agni-Prime missile, which boasts a range of up to 2,000 kilometers, includes several advanced features designed for modern warfare. According to a statement from the Defence Ministry, the missile represents a significant step forward in India’s strategic capabilities.
The historic launch took place from a specially designed mobile launcher that can operate seamlessly on the rail network without any preconditions. This capability enhances cross-country mobility, allowing for quick deployment and reduced visibility during operations.
The Agni-Prime missile is self-sustaining and integrates independent launch capabilities, state-of-the-art communication systems, and effective protection mechanisms. This ensures that it can be deployed quickly while maintaining a low profile.
As part of the launch evaluation, various ground stations tracked the missile’s trajectory, confirming that it met all designated mission objectives. This success paves the way for the induction of futuristic rail-based systems into India’s armed forces.
The event attracted attention from senior DRDO scientists and officers from the Strategic Forces Command, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this achievement. The earlier version, the road mobile Agni-P, has already entered service after successful flight trials, further solidifying India’s missile capabilities.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh offered his congratulations to the teams involved, stating that this flight test positions India among select nations that have developed canisterized launch systems capable of operating from rail networks. In a post on X, he said, “This successful test elevates India’s strategic edge in missile technology.”
He elaborated on the operational benefits, noting, “The ability to launch from the rail network in a timely manner allows for strategic flexibility crucial for national security.”
Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO commended all participating teams for their outstanding work and successful execution of the launch. This achievement not only enhances India’s military might but also boosts confidence in indigenous defense technologies.
As India continues to enhance its defense capabilities, the successful launch of the Agni-Prime missile marks a pivotal moment. It demonstrates the nation’s technological advancements and commitment to self-reliance in defense.
