Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the critical need for peace in Jammu and Kashmir for the development of tourism and sports sectors during an event on Sunday. Abdullah stated that without peace, attractions such as evening sports events would struggle to draw crowds.
The Chief Minister made these remarks while launching a special edition jersey for the Real Kashmir Football Club, underlining that the initiative symbolizes his commitment to peace and unity. He remarked, “Peace is the foundation for everything. The message of today’s programme, the jersey, is also peace.”
Abdullah’s comments resonate with sentiments shared by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who earlier asserted that peace serves as a prerequisite for all developmental initiatives in the Union Territory. Sinha noted lingering remnants of terrorism and emphasized the need for restored stability.
During the press meet, Abdullah highlighted that his government frequently faces criticism for various incidents in Kashmir, despite law and order being outside his administration’s direct control. He stated, “At least there is something for which we cannot be held responsible because establishing peace is not the responsibility of my government.”
In his address, Abdullah assured that his administration focuses on enhancing sports infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir. He explained that “there is hardly any assembly segment where some sports infrastructure is not being built by our government.” The initiative aims to engage the youth and foster sporting events that bring communities together.
His government has planned a series of local sports tournaments, culminating in the second edition of the Kashmir marathon scheduled for November 2. Abdullah extended invitations to athletes nationwide, encouraging participation in the “half-marathon” event in Srinagar. He believes such activities not only promote sports but also symbolize a hopeful future for peace in the region.
On infrastructure concerns, Abdullah addressed the status of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, which has faced disruptions due to recent landslides. He reported that while repairs are pending, no vehicles remain stranded, assuring the public that “we will do black-topping on the 300-metre stretch that was washed away when the situation allows.”
During the event at the TRC Ground, where the Real Kashmir FC’s “Peace Jersey” was unveiled, Abdullah described the design as a representation of Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage. The jersey, created in collaboration with the renowned Danish sportswear brand Hummel, draws inspiration from the historic Hari Parbat Fort, symbolizing communal harmony and peace.
