Four Indians Among 40 Dead in Kuwait Fire

New Delhi, June 12: A devastating fire broke out in a building in Mangaf, southern Kuwait, early Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 40 people, including four Indians, as per local media reports.

The building was predominantly occupied by a Malayalam-speaking community. Among the Indian victims, two were from Tamil Nadu and two from North India, although official confirmation from authorities is still pending. Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, expressed his deep shock over the incident. In a tweet, he stated, “Deeply shocked by the news of the fire incident in Kuwait city. There are reportedly over 40 deaths and over 50 have been hospitalized. Our Ambassador has gone to the camp. We are awaiting further information. Deepest condolences to the families of those who tragically lost their lives. Wish early and full recovery to those who have been injured. Our embassy will render the fullest assistance to all concerned in this regard.”

The fire, which erupted in a building used to house workers, was reported to authorities at 6:00 a.m. local time (0300 GMT), according to Major General Eid Rashed Hamad. Senior police officers informed state media that the building was densely populated, which contributed to the high number of casualties. Dozens were rescued, but many succumbed to smoke inhalation.

The Kuwaiti health ministry reported that approximately 43 people were hospitalized due to the fire, with four of them succumbing to their injuries. It remains unclear if these four fatalities are in addition to the 35 reported by the police.

Authorities have contained the fire and are currently investigating its cause.
