JAMMU, JULY 30: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the New Education Policy 2020 and renamed the Ministry of Human Resource and Development as the Ministry of Education. The new policy would also see an overhaul of the system in place in higher education.
PROPOSED PROVISIONS UNDER THE NEW EDUCATION POLICY 2020 –
Plans to change the pedagogical structure from the existing 10 + 2 scheme to a 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 scheme
Proposal for removing Board exams for class 10th
Classes from 9th to 12th will be divided into eight semesters
Language and mathematics will be emphasised from classes 1 to 3
The medium of instruction to be the mother tongue or local language till class 5 and preferably till class 8 and beyond.
No English to be taught until class 5. There will be an option to continue English education from class 8.
Plans for Foreign Investment (FDI) and external commercial activities.
Program for urban local bodies with the aim of giving internship opportunities to young engineers.
Proposal for National Police University and National Forensic University.
10)Top 100 universities to start completely online education programs.
11)Proposal to build digital infrastructure in the country to support online education and bridge the digital divide.
Plans for developing virtual labs, strengthen online exam process, separate digital unit in the Education Ministry.
More stress on sports and physical education will be paid.
Moreover, UG degree will have Multiple Exit Points – The undergraduate degree will be of either 3 or 4 year duration, with multiple exit options within this period, with appropriate certifications. E.g. A certificate after completing 1 year in a discipline or field including vocational and professional areas, or a diploma after 2 years of study, or a Bachelor’s degree after a 3-year programme. The 4-year multidisciplinary Bachelor’s programme, however, shall be the preferred option.
No hard separations between arts and sciences, between curricular and extra-curricular activities, between vocational and academic streams etc. in order to eliminate harmful hierarchies among different areas of learning.
Multi-disciplinary and a holistic education across the sciences, social sciences, arts, humanities etc has been taken into account in order to ensure the unity and integrity of all knowledge, during this pandemic.
