IMD Forecasts Southwest Monsoon Arrival in North Bengal Soon

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Monday that the southwest monsoon is set to enter West Bengal’s sub-Himalayan districts, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri, within the next three to four days. This prediction comes amid a backdrop of pre-monsoon rains already affecting the northern parts of the state.
According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, although the monsoon’s anticipated arrival is slightly delayed, it is expected to bring beneficial rains following its normal entry date of June 6. In the interim, northern districts are likely to experience significant rainfall. “The conditions are now favourable for the advancement of the monsoon as the current climatic indicators suggest heavy downpours in the coming days,” stated an IMD spokesperson.
The sub-Himalayan regions of West Bengal, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar, are poised to receive substantial rainfall over the next 48 hours. The IMD forecasts that heavy rainfall, combined with the existing humidity, will significantly affect the weather patterns across these districts.
The situation has already begun to unfold, with Alipurduar recording the highest rainfall in the state over the past 24 hours, measuring 133 mm, as of 8:30 am on Monday. Other districts reported varying amounts, including 53 mm in Jalpaiguri, 18 mm in Cooch Behar, 7.8 mm in Darjeeling, and 19 mm in Kalimpong.
Despite the showers, the southern districts of West Bengal remain humid. The IMD urges residents to prepare for unpredictable weather as light to moderate rain is likely in these southern areas during the next two days.
