Srinagar, May 6: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti launched a severe critique of the ruling National Conference (NC) on Wednesday, accusing it of politicizing religious scripture to distract from its governance failures. She emphasized that the NC should refrain from dragging the Quran into political disputes.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Mehbooba expressed her discontent, stating, “For God’s sake, do not drag Quran into politics. They (NC) are doing this to hide their failures over the past two years of being in government. People are disheartened with them.”
Her remarks come in response to a statement made earlier by NC chief spokesman Tanvir Sadiq and MLA Zadibal, who demanded that Mehbooba and her MLAs swear by the Quran that they did not vote for the BJP in the recent Rajya Sabha elections held in Jammu and Kashmir.
An RTI query indicated that the PDP had not appointed a chief agent for the Rajya Sabha polls conducted in October last year. This revelation has allowed the NC to allege that the PDP’s three MLAs supported the BJP during the elections.
Mehbooba strongly refuted these claims and redirected the conversation towards pressing issues impacting the populace. “Houses are being demolished under the garb of fighting drugs. Earlier the same thing was done under the pretext of fighting terrorism. Employees are being summarily dismissed while open merit students are going through tormenting times,” she asserted.
The former chief minister criticized the NC for what she perceived as a lack of effective government action, stating, “All this government has done so far is being a mute spectator.” She urged the National Conference to engage in political debate without resorting to the manipulation of religious texts.
Mehbooba’s comments come at a time when the political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir remains highly charged and contentious. The PDP leader’s call to avoid politicizing religious sentiments resonates with many who believe in the need for secular and rational political discourse.
