In a significant milestone for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth, one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution. The baby was born on 25th October 2025 at 1:20 PM to a diabetic mother.
Shortly after birth, the newborn developed severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes of life. Recognizing the critical condition, medical staff promptly admitted the infant to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced management and careful monitoring.
Due to the baby’s large-for-gestational-age status and acute respiratory compromise, specialized neonatal respiratory support was initiated immediately. The NICU team monitored the baby closely for respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity. Over several days, the infant showed positive progress, leading to a gradual reduction in respiratory support.
For the final 72 hours before discharge, the baby exhibited stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation. Importantly, there were no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation during this period. After demonstrating sustained clinical stability, the newborn received a discharge in healthy condition with routine follow-up advised.
This successful management of a challenging case reflects the expertise and dedication of the pediatric team at GMC Doda. The effort was led by the Head of the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Najmus Saqib, along with faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. The team included a committed group of senior and junior residents.
