GMC Doda Achieves Milestone with First Thrombolysis for Stroke

In a historic medical advancement, the Government Medical College (GMC) Doda has successfully performed its first thrombolysis procedure on a stroke patient, providing a lifeline to the Chenab Valley region.

The pioneering treatment took place on November 2 under the leadership of Principal Dr. Rakesh Bahl and the Head of the Department of Medicine, Dr. Amir Hussain Parray. This breakthrough marks a significant enhancement in emergency healthcare services, ensuring that patients in the area receive timely and effective treatment.

The patient, Roshan Lal, a resident of village Dolli in Gundna tehsil, presented with classic stroke symptoms and was promptly admitted to GMC Doda. The medical team led by Dr. Govinder Kumar (MD Medicine) — alongside Dr. Divyanshu (Resident Doctor) and Dr. Momin (Intern) — conducted a thorough evaluation and initiated treatment immediately. The successful execution of this complex procedure also relied heavily on the diligent efforts of Mr. Rajinder Singh, Mr. Arif Mir, and the dedicated nursing staff.

Experts revealed that Lal responded positively to the thrombolytic therapy, demonstrating promising recovery signs. Previously, stroke patients in Doda faced significant risks, as they were often referred to GMC Jammu or other major medical centers, frequently resulting in the loss of critical time during transport. The successful implementation of thrombolysis at GMC Doda significantly enhances the prospects for early intervention.

Dr. Bahl expressed his pride in the team’s accomplishment, describing it as “a landmark achievement for GMC Doda that will greatly benefit the population in remote areas.” He emphasized that patients can now access advanced treatment in their district without delay — an essential factor in stroke management.

Dr. Parray added, “This success is not merely a medical procedure; it exemplifies our commitment to improving emergency healthcare capabilities. It represents hope and progress for the Chenab region’s residents.”

The procedure has garnered immense praise from the local community, recognizing that this achievement stabilizes and strengthens rural healthcare infrastructure. The community views this as a vital step towards ensuring that lives are saved within the critical golden hour following a stroke onset.

This transformative event signifies GMC Doda’s commitment to providing cutting-edge medical care and improving health outcomes for residents in the region. With advanced procedures like thrombolysis now available locally, the future of healthcare in Doda appears brighter than ever.
