Delhi’s Air Quality Plummets to Poor Category Again

NEW DELHI: (Nov 1) Delhi’s air quality plummeted to a ‘poor’ category once again, as the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) rose to 251 on November 1, up from 218 the previous day, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data. This shift in air quality poses health threats, especially for senior citizens, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Authorities recorded AQI readings across various monitoring stations, revealing alarming trends. The AQI categorized as ‘very poor’ at eight locations indicates an urgent need for mitigation measures. As per the CPCB’s Sameer app, Wazirpur reported the most concerning AQI level at 333, signifying a severe impact on health and exacerbation of respiratory conditions.

Health experts caution that continued exposure to such levels of pollution significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, respiratory ailments, and other serious health issues. Delhi’s persistent air quality crisis underscores the critical need for immediate action and policy interventions aimed at reducing emissions from vehicles and industries, as well as curbing construction dust.

The current atmosphere also reflects the adverse effects of stubble burning in neighbouring states, along with urban pollution sources. Experts previously highlighted that factors like vehicular emissions, industrial discharges, and construction activities significantly contribute to degrading air quality in the capital.

Public responses to the deteriorating air quality have called for urgent measures. Earlier this week, environmental activists rallied for governmental accountability, urging authorities to implement more stringent regulations to control air pollution effectively.

Authorities have rolled out various initiatives to combat the rising pollution levels. These include increasing green cover, promoting public transport usage, and enhancing waste management systems which directly correlate with air quality improvement.

Ultimately, the public’s health hinges on a robust response, combining community efforts and government commitments to ensure cleaner air in Delhi. Until then, citizens must remain vigilant and take precautions against the harmful effects posed by the ongoing air quality crisis.
