In a significant announcement today, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Satish Sharma, confirmed that there is no shortage of food grains in the Keran and Jamgund areas of Kupwara district. This statement came during a Legislative House session where he responded to a Calling Attention Motion raised by MLA Mir Saifullah, who voiced his concerns regarding the accessibility of essential food grains in these remote regions.
MLA Mir Saifullah pointed out that Keran and Jamgund remain isolated for nearly six months each winter due to heavy snowfall. This prolonged disruption often results in acute shortages of essential commodities for the local populations. The MLA’s concerns echoed the sentiments of many residents who rely heavily on timely food supplies.
In a detailed response, Minister Sharma reassured the house that the government implements advance food grain supply and dumping strategies to cater to these remote areas. He explained that supplies are strategically planned for eight months (November to June) in every season. This proactive measure ensures that residents do not face food shortages during harsh winter months.
Minister Sharma provided statistical evidence of the comprehensive food supply efforts in these regions. For Jamgund alone, he reported that the area requires 536.14 quintals of food grains for the upcoming season. In a positive development, 100% of the required quantity has already been delivered.
Similarly, concerning the Keran area, the government has transported a significant portion of the required supply. Out of the total required 2774.43 quintals, 800 quintals have been received, with an additional 346.80 quintals preemptively dumped at designated locations to ensure accessibility.
“We aim to ensure that the remaining quantity reaches its destination by or before October 31, 2025,” Sharma asserted confidently. He emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to providing uninterrupted food supplies to all remote and border regions of Jammu and Kashmir.

This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to bolster food security in challenging topographies, ensuring that residents are well-supported, especially in times of seasonal adversity.
