Candidates filing nominations for Rajya Sabha in Jammu and Kashmir

The political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir is primed for a fierce contest as nine candidates file nominations for four Rajya Sabha seats. Among these candidates are four representing the ruling National Conference (NC) and three from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The nominations were submitted to Returning Officer Manoj Pandita, Secretary of the Assembly, today.

This election cycle features a strategic race linked closely to the political power dynamics in the region. For the first seat up for grabs, Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan of the NC, Dr. Ali Muhammad Mir from the BJP, alongside independent Prabhakar Dada, have all submitted their papers.

Given that the NC alliance commands a collective strength of 53 MLAs, Ramzan appears to have a strong hold on this seat, even in the absence of Congress backing. The BJP, bolstered by its 28 MLAs, hopes to leverage strategic voting.

In the second notification, Sajad Kichloo of the NC and Rakesh Mahajan of the BJP have announced their candidacies for yet another single seat. Political analysts predict a similar voting trend, making Kichloo a likely contender for victory.

For the third notification, which encompasses two positions, the scene becomes more competitive. NC’s Gurwinder Singh Oberoi, also known as Shammi Oberoi, and Imran Dar alongside the BJP’s Sat Pal Sharma and independent Kante Sayanna have filed their nominations. Observers assess that the top two candidates with the highest votes will win.

Currently, there is an expectation that the NC will secure 29 votes for Oberoi and 24 votes for Imran Dar. On the other hand, the BJP’s Sat Pal Sharma could receive unanimous support from his party’s legislators, potentially solidifying his claim to a seat.

After submitting his nomination, Rakesh Mahajan highlighted the BJP’s camaraderie and strength, expressing optimism: “I am thankful to the national leadership for this honour. I am sure we will win all three seats. The BJP gives equal opportunity to every worker, and all get their due right,” he stated.

Echoing the sentiments of determination, BJP president Sat Sharma remarked on the party’s commitment: “We will fight with all our strength and script history. We aim to win more than one seat this time,” he affirmed, promising to bolster the party’s presence in the Rajya Sabha.

BJP nominee Dr. Ali Mohammed Mir elaborated on the significance of his candidacy, stating, “Entire Kashmir is happy. I thank the central leadership for considering me competent for this responsibility,” reflecting the sentiments of a hopeful party.

Meanwhile, NC chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq confirmed the successful completion of the nomination process, insisting confidence in their chances: “We are confident of winning all four seats. However, it is unfortunate that Congress did not agree to what was offered. I urge all secular forces to support our candidates,” he emphasized.

Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan, a senior NC leader, assured constituents of his commitment to addressing key political and developmental concerns within Parliament. He stated, “We will come up to people’s expectations. There are a number of issues — developmental and political — that must be addressed, and we will talk about them,” affirming his dedication to public service.

The elections for the four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled to take place later this month. The outcome holds significant implications for the political landscape of the region and may influence the balance of power in the coming years.
