Farooq Abdullah comments on J&K tourism revival post Pahalgam attack

The president of the National Conference (NC), Farooq Abdullah, expressed his approval of the Jammu and Kashmir government’s efforts to rejuvenate tourism on Monday. His remarks came on the heels of the recent reopening of tourist destinations across the region following the tragic Pahalgam attack.

In an official statement, Abdullah extended his warm wishes to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and to global admirers of the region as the world commemorated World Tourism Day on September 27.

He noted that as the world celebrates the significance of tourism, it serves as a reminder for people in Jammu and Kashmir to reflect on their roles. For this region, tourism represents not just an economic activity, but a vital source of livelihood for thousands and an integral part of their social structure.

In his speech, Abdullah praised the efforts of the Omar Abdullah-led government for resuscitating the tourism sector, particularly in the wake of the Pahalgam tragedy, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives, mainly tourists.

“The administration responded effectively to restore tourist confidence, reaffirming J&K’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination,” the senior Abdullah remarked. “These efforts laid a strong foundation for sustainable growth in the tourism industry.”

Welcoming the reopening of additional tourist sites, the NC president highlighted the need for inclusive development, placing equal emphasis on regions like Chenab and Pir Panjal.

On Friday, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha authorized the reopening of several tourist destinations that had remained closed following the April 22 terror attack.

Abdullah further stressed the significance of establishing sustainable tourism models that safeguard the environment while preserving the rich cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Let this World Tourism Day serve as a reminder of our shared responsibility to create a peaceful, progressive, and inviting Jammu and Kashmir. We desire a place where every tourist feels valued and every resident benefits from tourism-led development,” he concluded.
