Prominent political figure and former chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Professor Abdul Gani Bhat, was laid to rest in Sopore on Thursday. He passed away at the age of 90 at his residence in Botingoo, Sopore, on Wednesday evening.
The funeral service for Professor Bhat was held at the Markazi Jamia Masjid in Batingoo on Wednesday night. The following day, numerous individuals from all walks of life visited his home to pay their respects and offer condolences to his grieving family.
Political Leaders Express Condolences for Prof. Bhat
Following the news of his passing, political leaders across the spectrum expressed their sorrow. Dr. Farooq Abdullah, president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, shared heartfelt tributes. In his condolence message, Dr. Abdullah highlighted Bhat’s dedication to peaceful dialogue.
“Our political ideologies were poles apart, but I will always remember him as a very civil and dignified individual,” said Dr. Abdullah. “He was a moderate and courageous voice who stood for dialogue when many believed violence was the only way forward. May Allah Almighty elevate his station in the highest echelons of Jannat.”
A Voice for Peace in Difficult Times
The legacy of Professor Bhat as a voice for peace and moderation was echoed by Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir, Molvi Umar Farooq. He expressed his deep respect, recalling a 35-year association with Bhat as a privilege. “Prof. Bhat consistently upheld dialogue and peaceful engagement as the only practical way to address the Kashmir issue,” said Mirwaiz.
Mirwaiz highlighted Bhat’s unique ability to speak out for peace, stating, “At a time when many thought otherwise, he had the courage to speak openly and firmly despite suffering personal losses.”
Reflections on a Scholar-Politician’s Impact
Former Union Minister, Professor Saifuddin Soz, also lamented the loss of his long-time friend and close associate. “I express my deepest sorrow on the demise of a scholar-politician—Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat of Botengo, Sopore,” said Soz.
“Prof. Abdul Gani was a very lovable person and he will be remembered for long. He never harbored ill feelings against anyone. Even when we differed on politics, he remained cheerful and accommodating,” Soz reflected.
Chowdry Mohammad Ramzan, an NC leader and former minister, shared his personal memories of Professor Bhat. “He was my teacher and mentor during my graduation years at Baramulla College. Above all, he was a truly good human being,” Ramzan stated.
The grief shared by the community demonstrates Professor Bhat’s profound impact as a respected scholar and politician. As one observer noted, “His absence has created a void that cannot be filled, but his vision and example will continue to inspire and guide.”
