Industry Must Invest and Expand Capacities, Says Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called on India Inc to invest and expand capacities during her address at the IFQM Symposium on Thursday. She emphasized that the government has aligned its policies with industry expectations, creating an encouraging environment for businesses.

Sitharaman’s message was clear: it’s time for the industry to take decisive action. “The world is calling for resilience and alternative supply chain sources,” she stated, highlighting the potential India holds.

Government Policies Foster Business Growth

During her speech, she reiterated that the government has prioritized the ease of doing business, tax reforms, and policies favoring Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). “Today I have a basket of things on which the government has delivered,” Sitharaman mentioned. “I hope there is no more hesitation for the industry to invest further, to produce more in India.”

Encouraging Collaboration Between Government and Industry

According to Sitharaman, the time for mere dialogues is over; she encouraged a continuous partnership between the government and the private sector. “Industries should engage with the government throughout the year and not just before the Budget,” she said, reinforcing the need for collective efforts in nurturing the nation’s workforce.

The Finance Minister’s statements come in response to inquiries from Tata Sons chairman, N Chandrasekaran, who voiced the significance of capital investments for both the domestic and export markets. He acknowledged the inviting opportunity created by the government and encouraged more entrepreneurs to step forward.

Importance of MSMEs in Economic Growth

Furthermore, Sitharaman underlined the critical role of the **Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)** in contributing to India’s GDP. “The government has ensured that the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) is physically present in MSME clusters,” she added, reflecting the government’s commitment to empower the sector.

“Even in this day and age when we talk about digital banking, we insisted that SIDBI would be present in each of these clusters,” Sitharaman remarked, emphasizing the importance of local support for small businesses.

The Path Forward: Investment and Engagement

In conclusion, the Finance Minister’s call to action has significant implications not just for large corporations but for small and medium enterprises as well. Without investment, capturing emerging opportunities will be a challenge. Chandrasekaran highlighted, “Without that investment, we will not be able to capture the opportunity.”

As India looks towards a future filled with potential, it is clear that collaboration between the government and the industry is crucial. Leaders are urged to respond to this call by not just discussing strategies but also by stepping up to make those investments for growth.

With the structural reforms in place and an open invitation for collaboration, both the government and businesses can work hand in hand to navigate the challenges of the evolving market landscape.
