Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his last respects to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh at his residence in Delhi on Friday. The Prime Minister also extended condolences to Singh’s family on his demise.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Health Minister and BJP National President JP Nadda also visited the residence to offer their tributes. Congress leaders, including KC Venugopal, were present to pay their respects.
Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away at AIIMS, Delhi, on Thursday evening at the age of 92 due to age-related medical conditions. He experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at home before being rushed to the hospital.
Public Viewing of Mortal Remains at AICC Headquarters
The Congress party announced that the mortal remains of the former Prime Minister would be kept at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi for public viewing. The ‘last darshan’ is scheduled for Saturday morning between 8:00 and 10:00 AM.
Senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, are expected to pay tribute to the former PM at the AICC office. Following this, the last rites will be performed near Rajghat, at the location designated for the cremation of former Prime Ministers.
Nation Mourns the Loss of a Visionary Leader
Dr. Singh, celebrated for introducing the 1991 Economic Liberalisation Reforms as Finance Minister, was instrumental in transforming India’s economic landscape. These reforms opened the Indian economy to foreign investments, increased FDI, and reduced government control, catalyzing economic growth.
Born on September 26, 1932, Dr. Singh also served as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985. He was India’s 13th Prime Minister, serving from 2004 to 2014, and became the longest-serving PM after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
Landmark Achievements During His Tenure
- National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA): Introduced under Singh’s government, the scheme later became known as MGNREGA, providing rural employment and enhancing livelihoods.
- Right to Information Act (RTI): Passed in 2005, this landmark legislation promoted transparency and accountability in governance.
Dr. Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year after an illustrious 33-year tenure. His contributions to India’s political and economic framework remain unmatched.
