India Reiterates Commitment to Enhancing Africa’s Role in Global Security and Development

In a compelling speech at the United Nations Security Council, India’s Permanent Representative, Ruchira Kamboj, reiterated India’s steadfast commitment to enhancing the involvement of African nations in addressing global security and development challenges. Speaking during an open debate on the agenda item “Maintenance of international peace and security,” Kamboj highlighted the enduring friendship between India and Africa, built on historical connections and shared solidarity. She emphasized India’s belief in the importance of Africa’s rise for achieving true multipolarity in the global order, pledging India’s support to Africa’s priorities through bilateral and multilateral channels.

Kamboj emphasized the inseparable link between peace and development, asserting that peace cannot exist without development. She stressed the significance of sustainable economic progress through investments in education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and energy security, advocating for genuine partnerships that empower Africans and align with their needs.

The Indian representative outlined key measures to enhance Africa’s role on the global stage, including reforming the UN Security Council to provide permanent representation to African nations, adopting a regional approach to peace and security issues, and prioritizing the fight against terrorism in Africa. She reiterated India’s call for increased African representation in the Security Council and underscored the urgency of combating terrorism in the region.

Kamboj highlighted India’s commitment to empowering the Global South and rectifying historical injustices, emphasizing the need for permanent African representation in an expanded council. She called for accountability for delaying African representation and advocated for supporting collaborative efforts among African countries and regional organizations to address security challenges.

Addressing the pressing security threats in Africa, Kamboj stressed the importance of a regional approach and called for enhanced support and resources to combat terrorism effectively. She emphasized the need for clear exit strategies for peacekeeping missions and prevention of external interventions in African affairs.

Highlighting India’s proactive stance, Kamboj mentioned India’s successful campaign for the admission of the African Union into the G20 during its presidency in 2023, urging the international community to seize the upcoming summit as an opportunity to reform the multilateral system and amplify African voices.
