Srinagar, May 24: The Meteorological Department has advised residents of Jammu and Kashmir to avoid heat exposure and stay hydrated as the heatwave is expected to persist for the next five days.
“Heatwave conditions over the plains of Jammu & Kashmir Divisions are likely to continue during the next five days,” a meteorological department official stated. Hot and dry weather is also forecasted for the hilly districts during this period.
The official emphasized the importance of staying hydrated, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, infants, and children. “Avoid heat exposure and drink a lot of fluids and water,” he urged.
From May 24-28, generally dry weather is anticipated, although isolated thundershower activity cannot be ruled out. Between May 29-31, partly to generally cloudy weather with light rain or thundershowers at isolated places is expected, mainly in the afternoons. “Overall, no significant weather activity is expected until May 31,” the official added.
Night temperatures have been rising, with Srinagar recording a low of 15.4°C, which is 3.7°C above normal for this time of the year. Qazigund reported a minimum temperature of 12.0°C, 1.7°C above normal, while Pahalgam saw a low of 8.5°C, 2.3°C above normal.
In south Kashmir, Kokernag recorded a minimum of 13.0°C, 2.9°C above normal. Kupwara town registered a low of 12.0°C, 1.6°C above normal. Gulmarg experienced a minimum temperature of 11.8°C, which is 5.0°C above normal for the famous skiing resort.
In Jammu, the recorded low was 27.6°C, 3.2°C above normal. Other areas such as Banihal, Batote, and Bhaderwah recorded lows of 12.6°C, 15.3°C, and 13.0°C respectively.
