JAMMU:National Democratic Party Indian (NDPI) has expressed anguish and shock over rising number of road accidents in the Union Territory.Strongly condemning the Traffic Department for road accidents, NDPI J&K UT Chief Rajesh Gupta said, “Blood continues to be spilt, as the UT recorded the highest number of fatalities in a decade last year but there is no seriousness and responsibility shown by administration on increasing number of road accidents occurring often”.
The NDPI president said as deaths take place frequently on the roads, functioning of traffic authorities and Motor Vehicle Departments is questionable. He further said the traffic department is not performing their duties smartly. They are least bothered about the human deaths considering them like insects. Even LG administration is not taking road accidental deaths seriously.
Gupta redirected his demand and appealed to LG for raising awareness about road safety, Road Safety Fund, strengthening of highway patrolling for prevention of accidents and fatalities, besides deployment of Ambulances.
NDPI president urged J&K Lieutenant Governor to give top priority to human values as a person’s life is more precious than anything else. He said that the Lt Governor should personally intervene and take strong measures and pass strict instruction to concerned authorities. He said buses, mini buses drivers and bikers should be dealt with iron hands and traffic cops should be more vigilant while on duty.
He said according to recent data, the number of people killed in road accidents in the UT is twice the number of fatalities — which includes civilians, security forces and militant deaths — caused by unrest in the UT.
Gupta said that miserable conditions of J&K roads have become a virtual death trap.
Taking note of regular incidents of road accidents in particular areas, Gupta urged LG Manoj Sinha to direct concern authorities of the health department to explore possibility of developing more trauma centers near accident-prone highways to help accident victims during the crucial golden hours.
He expressed serious concern over the frequent road accidents and loss of large number of lives.
