The term Raksha Bandhan comes from a Sanskrit word “Rakshabandhanam” in which Raksha means “To protect” and bandhanam means “Bond”. Thus, Raksha Bandhan means a Bond of Protection. Rakhi is tied by the sister on her brother’s wrist. The brother then promises to protect his sister for the rest of his life. Rakshabandhan is not just celebrated between blood relations. One can also tie a rakhi to a person she refers to as a brother or with whom someone is not biologically related. The festival is celebrated on the full moon day, in the month of shravan (Saawan) according to the Hindu calendar.
The festival of Raksha Bandhan is known to have originated centuries ago. There are several mythological stories behind the celebration of this auspicious festival. One of the most popular story in Indian mythology is that of Lord Krishna and Draupadi. Based on an account of Mahabharat, Draupadi, wife of Pandavas tied a rakhi to Lord Krishna while Kunti tied the rakhi to grandson Abhimanyu before the epic war.
According to one narrative, on a Sankranti day, Krishna accidently cut his little finger while handling sugarcane. Sathyabama, his queen immediately sent help to get a bandage cloth while his other consort, Rukmini rushed to bring some cloth herself.
Draupadi who was nearby, tore off a part of her sari and bandaged his finger. In return, Krishna promised to protect her.
According to the other narrative, Lord Krishna hurt his finger while killing Shisupala. He held the sudarshana chakra on his finger that he sent to the king’s way. Within a second, Shishupala was beheaded. Lord Krishna’s finger started bleeding. Seeing the bleeding finger, Draupadi rushed to him. She couldn’t bear the sight and immediately tore a piece of cloth from her saree and tied it on Lord Krishna’s finger. Lord Krishna then promised to show gratitude in the future. This debt was repaid later when Lord Krishna protected Draupadi as the Kauravas tried to strip her. They disgraced her by removing her saree.
Though Draupadi and Lord krishna were not real brother and sister, they shared a strong bond of love and affection.
