GMC Doda NICU Celebrates Success with Heaviest Newborn Care

In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Government Medical College Doda successfully managed the case of a newborn weighing an impressive 6 kilograms at birth. This milestone was recorded on 25th October 2025, when the baby was delivered to a diabetic mother.

After birth, occurring at 1:20 PM, the newborn faced severe respiratory distress just thirty minutes later. The medical team swiftly recognized the urgent need for intervention and admitted the infant to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for immediate care.

Upon admission, health professionals implemented specialized respiratory support tailored for the baby’s large-for-gestational-age classification and signs of respiratory distress. During the critical early days of hospitalization, the dedicated team observed the infant’s respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological condition closely.

Over the next few days, the baby’s condition gradually improved, allowing the medical staff to reduce reliance on respiratory support progressively. For the last 72 hours before discharge, the baby successfully maintained stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation, with no episodes indicative of respiratory distress.

Once achieving sustained clinical stability, the newborn received clearance for discharge in a healthy state, accompanied by standard follow-up recommendations for continued monitoring.

This successful outcome represents the expertise of the Department of Pediatrics under the expert guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, the Head of the Department. Notable contributions also came from faculty members such as Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. Their teamwork, along with the commitment demonstrated by the senior and junior residents, played a pivotal role in managing this challenging case.

The exceptional efforts of the nursing and paramedical teams at GMC Doda also merit appreciation. Their vigilant monitoring and compassionate care proved vital in ensuring the baby’s recovery.

This achievement highlights the growing neonatal expertise within the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda, reflecting their ongoing commitment to provide quality care grounded in evidence and compassion for newborns and children in the region.
