Jammu and Kashmir’s Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, met Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, in New Delhi today. Their discussion focused on strengthening sports infrastructure and enhancing youth engagement in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sharma presented a comprehensive memorandum to the Union Minister, reiterating the J&K Government’s commitment to transform the Union Territory into a thriving sports hub. This initiative primarily aims to empower the youth through athletics.
Proposals outlined in the memorandum emphasized infrastructure development, athlete welfare, and grassroots participation. These align with both the National Sports Policy 2025 and the J&K Sports Policy 2022.
Sharma specifically requested assistance from the Union Government to expedite the development of world-class sports facilities. Key projects include the National Winter Sports Centre of Excellence at Gulmarg, modernization of district stadiums, and creation of sports amenities at the panchayat level to provide equitable access for rural youth.
In addition, he called for the expansion of Khelo India grassroots programs, increasing scholarship and financial aid for athletes. The proposal also highlighted the need for integrating sports science and physiotherapy into athlete training systems.
To enhance the sports tourism sector and achieve global exposure for the region, Sharma proposed hosting international winter sports events in Gulmarg. This initiative aims to position Jammu and Kashmir as a premier global destination for winter and adventure sports.
Additionally, the Minister requested the prompt release of ₹103.82 crore under Khelo India. This funding is crucial for the completion of essential sports infrastructure projects within the region.
In response, Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya assured that a dedicated policy for promoting rural sports will be formulated shortly. He confirmed that funds for sports equipment will be allocated to support both ongoing and upcoming initiatives.
The meeting marks a pivotal step towards enriching the sporting ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting a collaborative effort between state and central authorities to uplift athletic standards and youth potential.
