New Delhi, Dec 24: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has strongly criticized the Government, accusing it of ignoring the plight of citizens grappling with soaring prices. Gandhi said the people are forced to compromise on their daily needs while the Government is “sleeping like Kumbhkaran.”
Sharing a video from his recent visit to a vegetable market in Giri Nagar, Gandhi highlighted the struggles of housewives and vendors due to rising food prices. “A few days ago, I visited a local vegetable market, interacted with customers, and spoke to vendors to understand how inflation is impacting the common person’s budget,” he said.
In his Hindi social media post, Gandhi elaborated on how essential food items like garlic, priced at ₹400 per kg, and peas at ₹120 per kg, have disrupted household budgets. “People are struggling to afford basic necessities. What will they eat, and what will they save?” he questioned.
The video shows Gandhi engaging with housewives, who shared their daily struggles. They revealed how stagnant wages and relentless inflation have made it nearly impossible to save money or even afford transportation costs. “Income has remained stagnant, inflation is uncontrollable, and saving is a distant dream,” Gandhi summarized after his conversations.
He urged citizens to share their experiences of coping with inflation, stating, “Tell us how this is affecting your life. Share your stories with us.”
In another post on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi said, “‘Garlic was once ₹40, today it is ₹400!’ Rising inflation has wrecked household budgets while the Government continues to sleep like Kumbhkaran.”
The Congress leader’s remarks came as part of a broader critique of the Government’s economic policies. The Congress party also joined in the criticism, with Jairam Ramesh, the party’s communications general secretary, targeting the Modi Government.
“The bullet train promised by the Government is yet to arrive, but inflation, spiraling faster than the speed of a bullet train, has broken the back of the common person,” Ramesh said in a post on X.
The Congress has been vocal about rising unemployment and the increasing cost of essential goods like flour, oil, spices, and dry fruits. According to a media report shared by Ramesh, prices of these items have surged by 1.5 to 2 times in the last year.
As inflation continues to squeeze household budgets, the Opposition has demanded concrete solutions instead of what they call “empty rhetoric” from the Government.
