Raebareli (UP), May 17: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, in a heartfelt address on Friday, entrusted her son Rahul Gandhi to the people of Rae Bareli, assuring them, “Rahul will not disappoint you.”
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve Rae Bareli as an MP for the past 20 years, Sonia Gandhi said, “My everything is given by you. So, brothers and sisters, I am giving you my son. You consider me yours.”
In an emotional appeal to the voters, she urged them to regard Rahul Gandhi as their own. “Rahul will not disappoint you,” she reiterated, standing alongside Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi at a joint election rally.
Sonia Gandhi reflected on the values she instilled in her children, lessons she learned from Indira Gandhi and the people of Rae Bareli. “I taught the same lessons to Rahul and Priyanka which Indira Gandhi and the people of Rae Bareli had taught me: to respect all, protect the weak, fight against injustice, and stand up for people’s rights. Don’t be afraid, because your roots of struggle and traditions are very deep,” she said.
Having been first elected as an MP from Rae Bareli in 2004, Sonia Gandhi represented the constituency until her recent election to the Rajya Sabha. This time, Rahul Gandhi is contesting from Rae Bareli.
Sonia Gandhi expressed her deep appreciation to the people of Rae Bareli for their trust and support. “You gave me a chance to serve you as MP for 20 years. This is the biggest asset of my life,” she said.
The rally also saw the presence of Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and other senior leaders of the Congress and the SP, underscoring the united front presented at the event.
