Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane said that its forces \ndeployed in the North East for counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism and\n internal security would be reduced once the Bodoland Territorial \nCouncil (BTC) elections are over. He said that two battalions have \nalready been taken off from such duties. \u201cTwo battalions have already \nbeen taken out. Once Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections are \nover, we would reduce more troops. In the next two to two and a half \nyears we would concentrate fully on conventional warfare in North-East \nrather on counter-insurgency operations,\u201d said Naravane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, General \nNaravane said, \u201cThe situation has improved after the abrogation of \narticle 370.\u201d The Central government on Monday signed a tripartite \nagreement with the representatives of all factions of the banned \norganization \u2014 National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The peace accord was signed in the presence of Home Minister Amit \nShah and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, which intends to \nfulfill key political and economic demands of the NDFB. Home Minister \nShah, while addressing media after signing the agreement said the new \ndevelopment will ensure \u201ca golden future for Assam and for the Bodo \npeople.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also stated that around 1550 of NDFB cadres will surrender on \nJanuary 30. \u201cAround 1550 cadres along with 130 weapons will surrender on\n January 30. As the Home Minister, I want to assure all representatives \nthat all promises will be fulfilled in a time-bound manner,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, commenting on the \ndevelopment, said that \u201call stakeholders of Bodo society have signed the\n agreement, reaffirming territorial integrity of Assam.\u201d \u201cBTAD will now \nbecome the Bodoland Territorial Region,\u201d Sarma added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is the third Bodo accord which has been signed in the last 27 \nyears since the movement for a separate Bodoland state commenced in \nAssam. The BTC was formed under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution. \nThe demand for a separate state for the Bodos has been going on in Assam\n for about five decades.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
