\nRanchi, Jan 28: One more person was arrested for the killing of seven \npeople by alleged supporters of ‘Pathalgarhi’, a self-rule movement, in \nJharkhand’s West Singhbhum district last week, taking the number of \narrests to 16, police said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Twenty seven-year-old \nMartin Logma was arrested on Monday and produced before a court in \nChakradharpur which remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days, an \nofficial release said.<\/ins><\/p>\n\n\n\n The\n other 15 accused, aged between 19 and 60 years, were arrested on Sunday\n and charged with murder and rioting, among others, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They\n were produced before the court of the sub-divisional judicial \nmagistrate, Chakradharpur, on Monday and were also remanded in judicial \ncustody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Pathalgarhi movement is a name given to a tribal \nprotest for autonomy to Gramsabha (village council). Its proponents want\n no laws of the land be applicable to the tribal people in the area and \nrefuse to accept government’s rights over forests and rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Its\n supporters carve their diktat on rocks in their areas of influence. The\n name ‘Pathalgarhi’ is derived from the practice of carving the edicts \nof the leaders of the movement on large stones called ‘pathal’ in local \nlanguage, while garhi means carving.<\/ins><\/p>\n\n\n\n Supporters\n of the movement had allegedly kidnapped seven villagers of Burugulikera\n in Guddi block on January 21 and killed them for opposing their stir. \nTheir mutilated bodies were recovered from a forest around 4 kilometres \nfrom the village the next day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A section of the tribals of the \nregion are opposed to the movement as it bars them from accepting \nbenefits of government schemes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The killings that took place days\n after the JMM- Congress-RJD coalition government assumed power in the \nstate on December 29, triggered widespread outrage and Chief Minister \nHemant Soren ordered an investigation by a special investigation team \n(SIT).\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Ranchi, Jan 28: One more person was arrested for the killing of seven people by alleged supporters of ‘Pathalgarhi’, a self-rule movement, in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district last week, taking the number of arrests to 16, police said on Tuesday.
