The internet is both a blessing as well as a curse in the present generation. This generation is very \u201ctechnology savvy\u201d and also \u201cInternet savvy\u201d. Through social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Youtube approximately 3.19 billion users converse and interact with each other by generating or sharing content. If you are a good observer or if you\u2019ve ever noticed the little ones in your family. You may have seen that the little kids in your family or outside your family handle electronic gadgets with so much ease. They have become so handy when it comes to the use of mobile phones or any other gadget. The little kids that have not yet learned to speak properly, know the use of the applications better than their parents do. They know it all, whether it\u2019s how to use the applications or how to operate them. Internet is something that we can say is on the tips of mankind. You\u2019re just a click away to any information you want to find. If you got a query, you just have to google it and the answer is right on the screen of your device.
Internet provides a huge platform to the people to express their opinions or views regarding current issues, political issues, social issues, cultural issues and so on. Internet has its Pros and Cons. There are millions of websites dedicated to varied topics. The social media sites help people connect to their loved ones sitting in any part of the world. Even during the covid-19 pandemic, people stayed in touch with their relatives and friends through the internet. Ever since the digital marketing has begun, business has just revolutionized. The social media has become a constant source of entertainment. We can scroll through social media memes that have become popular on social media since a few years. Memes are trending not only amongst the younger generation but also the adults. But where there are many positive influences, there are many disadvantages of the internet also. Discrimination exists not just in society, it exists on the internet too. People face discrimination on their skin colour, size, looks, sexual identity etc. Internet has a broad potential to provide harm to people. Being able to communicate with a mass audience has meant that the way we engage with political issues, public affairs and each other has also changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hateful messages and incitement to violence are distributed and amplified on social media in ways that were not possible a few years back. As more and more people got on social media, experts say, individuals inclined towards racism, misogyny or homophobia. Almost everyday people face trolling and online bullying. Not only commoners but even celebrities face so much hate and discrimination. Infact, Celebrities or Actors face online harassment more than any other section of the society. Celebrities are majorly trolled either through memes, hate comments or body shaming comments. For instance, Actress Sonam Kapoor is trolled a lot for her body structure. There have been abundant of memes trolling her and body shaming her. It\u2019s not just about Sonam but many other actresses face hate comments and trolling too. This is totally unethical and immoral. Such trolling and hatred can lead to a person committing some serious crime or even causing harm to his own self or to others. Recently, after the late Actor Sushant Singh Rajput died, the people who were interrogated related to his suicide case or the people related to him, faced a lot of humiliation. Their profiles were overflooded with hate comments and messages. Sushant Singh Rajput\u2019s ex girlfriend also faced hundreds of offensive and vulgar comments and messages. Actress Alia Bhat and her sister were getting rape threats on social media. At present, if you check the profiles of many actors or actresses, you\u2019ll find their comment sections to be limited. Only specific people can comment. Social media also offer violence promoters, the opportunity to publicize their acts. Hate speech, disinformation, and rumours in India have been responsible for acts of violence and deaths in India for some time.
A 2019 Microsoft study found that over 64% of Indians encounter fake news online, the highest reported amongst the 22 countries surveyed. There are a staggering number of edited images, manipulated videos and fake text messages or frawd messages spreading through social media platforms and messaging services like \u201cWhatsApp\u201d making it harder to distinguish between misinformation and credible facts. False messages spreading over WhatsApp is perhaps a bigger problem to solve. We can do our bit by checking the accuracy of the messages and not forwarding it until we know it\u2019s a true fact. WhatsApp has over 400 million users in India alone and messages are encrypted making it challenging to identify, report and remove content in the same way as it can on other social media platforms. In 2019, WhatsApp reported that it was deleting two million WhatsApp accounts per month as part of an effort to reduce the use of the app for the spread of fake or false news and misinformation. It is still not much and bigger initiatives need to be taken. The challenge of false news and hate speech needs careful consideration. In the meantime, we must all contribute in tackling the issue. As a responsible netizen, we must first ask ourselves whether something we read is true. We must question the articles and videos we receive and if we notice hate posts about violence, we should report it. Then again, if we receive forwarded posts or messages on WhatsApp, we must think twice before forwarding these on to another contact. Several incidents in recent years have shown that when online hatred goes offline, it can be dangerous. Many of the hatred related messages may lead to violent actions by people in their real lives. The online messages can turn into real life violence. The covid-19 pandemic has infected people this year but the fake news pandemic has been there in the society since a long time now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The internet culture often labels hate speech and posts as \u201ctrolling\u201d but the seriousness and viciousness of these posts and comments has transformed into something much more threatening in the recent years. There is clearly a huge difference between a hate speech and the freedom of speech. Hate speech encourages violence towards a person or a group based on race, religion, gender or any other thing. There has been much debate and discussions over freedom of speech, hate speech and hate speech legislation. The laws of some countries describe hate speech as speech, gestures, conduct, writing, or displays that encourage violence or prejudicial actions against an individual or a group. The law may identify a group based on certain characteristics.  In some countries, hate speech is not a legal term. Additionally, in some countries, including the United States, much of what falls under the category of “hate speech” is constitutionally protected.  In other countries, a victim of hate speech may seek redress under civil law, criminal law or both. Freedom of speech also referred to as \u201cFreedom of expression\u201d is a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or a community to articulate their opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship, or legal sanction. However, the limits on free speech are rooted in the principle that we\u2019re not allowed to harm others to get what we want. We are not allowed to use speech for force, fraud or defamation as what happens on the internet.
 Many of the netizens face cyber bullying or cyber harassment. It is a form of bullying or harassment using electronic means. Cyberbullying is a form of bullying that takes place via internet connected devices like smartphones, computers, or tablets. Cyberbullying can occur via social media, email, messaging apps, text messages, forums, games, and more. Any online medium that allows for the sharing of information can become a platform for cyberbullying. Cyberbullying and cyberharassment are also known as online bullying. It has become increasingly common, especially among teenagers, as the digital sphere has expanded and technology has advanced. Cyberbullying is when someone bullies or harasses others on the internet or over digital spaces, particularly on social media sites. Harmful bullying behavior can include posting rumors, threats, sexual remarks, a victim\u2019s personal details or information, or hate speech. Bullying or harassment can be identified by repeated unethical behavior and an intent to harm. Victims of cyberbulling may experience lower self-esteem, increased suicidal tendency, and a variety of negative emotional responses including being scared, frustrated, angry, or depressed. These kind of things can harm a person mentally. Internet trolling is a common form of bullying that takes place in an online community i.e social media sites or any online gaming platform. Parents and teachers should be aware of the different types of cyberbullying, so they can adopt measures to prevent and confront it among teenagers. There are different Types of Cyber Bullying. These are as follows:
\u2981 Doxing \u2013 publishing revealing personal information about an individual online, for purposes of humiliating, defaming, or harassing a person.
\u2981 Harassment \u2013 posting hurtful, threatening, or intimidating messages online, or sending them directly to someone, with the intention of harming that person.
\u2981 Impersonation \u2013 creating fake accounts or gaining access to a person\u2019s real social media accounts and posting things to damage the person\u2019s reputation.
\u2981 Cyberstalking \u2013 tracking and monitoring a person\u2019s online activity, and using the internet to stalk or harass an individual.
Cyberbullying can be faced by anyone, be it teenagers or adults. Now how can we prevent cyberbullying and save ourselves from it if we ever face it?
\u2981 Be aware of your online activities.
\u2981 Block the person who is bullying you.
\u2981 Report the account.
Cybercrime is any crime that takes place online. Cybercriminals often commit crimes by targeting computer networks or devices. Cybercrime can range from security breaches to identity theft. Other cybercrimes include things like \u201crevenge porn,\u201d cyber-stalking, harassment, bullying, and child sexual exploitation. One can protect himself\/herself against cyber crime by:
\u2981 Use strong passwords.
\u2981 Keep your software updated.
\u2981 Don\u2019t click on e-mailed links. Instead, type the website URL directly into the web browser\u2019s address bar or search for site using search engine like google.
\u2981 Avoid opening any attachments you were not expecting. Scan the attachments first for viruses.
\u2981 Do not share your login details such as username or password with anyone even if he or she is your close friend.
Types of Cybercrime
PHISHING:
Phishing is a technique used to gain personal or sensitive information of a PC user, which can be his bank details or credit card information.
CYBER-BULLYING:
Cyberbullying is insulting, harassing or threatening anyone using the internet via email or messenger etc.
IDENTITY THEFT:
Identity theft is the process of stealing your personal information such as social security number or driver license to open a bank account or apply for credit card etc.
HACKING:
Hacking is defined as an activity to intrude into your system or gain unauthorized access to your accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stopping cybercrime is the responsibility of the government or the bodies dedicated to the same but you can take some steps to stop cybercrime affecting you. The best way is to follow the cyber safety tips mentioned above. Reporting an internet crime to the dedicated authorities like cyber cell is also important to put a check on these types of crime. Often, people become a victim of cyber-attacks due to their ignorance or negligence thereby causing immense harm to themselves.
