Medical interns from ten Government Medical Colleges and two Dental Colleges in Jammu and Kashmir initiated a 48-hour hunger strike<\/strong> on Monday. This action follows a failed negotiation with the state government aimed at resolving their seven-day strike demanding an enhanced monthly stipend.<\/p>\n

The protesting interns expressed frustration over the lack of progress, stating that the government\u2019s prolonged silence complicates their situation. Dr. Faraz, one of the interns, articulated their determination, saying, “Our strike is indefinite. It will not stop until we receive an official order. It has been over a week since we started protesting, and if the government truly cares, they should act without delay.”<\/p>\n

Dr. Faraz emphasized that the hunger strike serves to exert sustained pressure on the government to respond to their demands appropriately.<\/p>\n

The collective of interns detailed their struggle, stressing that the government has had ample time to act on their requests. “We have already given them three years, and they keep asking for more time but deliver nothing in return,” said Faraz.<\/p>\n

According to the interns, a formal recommendation for stipend increase was submitted in 2023. Dr. Faraz added, “Even if we assume seriousness began after our protest, eight days have passed with no official communication from the government. Verbal reassurances of \u2018we will look into it in a month or two\u2019 do not suffice anymore.”<\/p>\n

He accused college authorities of attempting to intimidate students, stating, “It is unacceptable. We are protesting for our legitimate rights, and we will not cower before any intimidation or threats. We made it clear yesterday that attempts to silence us will fail.”<\/p>\n

Another intern, Dr. Musharaf, acknowledged some positive developments in the ongoing discussions with government officials. He noted, “While we have not reached a solution yet, dialogue continues. We will remain engaged in conversations, so it is premature to declare our efforts completely unsuccessful.”<\/p>\n
