This incident occurred on a recent Monday, inciting worry among the local community.

The alarming land subsidence along the banks of the Chenab River has generated panic, especially given the continued heavy rains that have impacted several regions within the district. Local officials confirmed multiple reports highlighting structural damages and ground instability.

In response, administrative, revenue, and rescue teams hastily mobilized to the affected region. Authorities swiftly transported the displaced families to safer locations to mitigate potential risks.

Tehsildar of Rajgarh, Major Singh, reported that a non-residential structure owned by Bhagat Ram had been completely washed away due to the subsidence. Moreover, significant cracks have emerged in the homes of local residents, including Chaat Ram, Chaman Lal, and Bhushan Lal. He emphasized that these damages accumulated within the last few days, following a series of torrential downpours.

Singh, accompanied by a team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), surveyed the area to oversee evacuation efforts. They provided tents to the affected families, ensuring they had temporary accommodations.

Furthermore, nearby officials, including the Naib Tehsildar, remain on-site to closely monitor the ongoing situation and assist residents as needed. Locals, however, expressed concerns about further damage. Reports indicated cracks and risk in additional houses belonging to individuals, such as Dev Raj, Hari Ram, Santosh Singh, Fallal Singh, and Shashram.

During this critical time, BJP Ramban district president, Neelam Kumar Lange, visited the site. He advocated for immediate compensation and comprehensive rehabilitation for those displaced by the incident. Lange also criticized the absence of any government ministers or local MLAs at the scene, claiming their neglect undermines efforts to assess the pressing situation effectively.

Residents attributed some of the subsidence to recent water releases from the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project, which may have destabilized the ground. Despite these claims, officials clarified that they have yet to determine the exact cause of the land subsidence.

In a related incident, a person operating a sand-extraction boat faced peril when swept away by strong currents in the nearby Chenab River near Pul Doda earlier that day. Fortunately, the SDRF successfully rescued the individual, who worked for a private company contracted to extract sand in the area.

Disaster response teams continue efforts to recover the machinery from the river, underscoring the ongoing commitment to managing the implications of these natural challenges in Ramban.

Ten members from three families were evacuated in Ramban due to land subsidence and structural cracks in their homes following heavy rainfall.
