Police on Tuesday arrested Javed Ahmad Mir<\/strong>, former chief of the banned Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF)<\/strong>, and Shakeel Ahmad Bakshi<\/strong>, founder of the Islamic Students League, in connection with a nearly three-decade-old militancy-related case<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to officials, Mir\u2014also known as Javed Nalka<\/strong>, resident of Zaina Kadal\u2014was arrested by Shergarhi Police<\/strong> for his alleged involvement in FIR No. 192\/1996<\/strong>, registered on 17 July 1996<\/strong> under Sections 341, 148, 336, 332 RPC<\/strong>, 7\/27 Arms Act<\/strong>, and Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA)<\/strong>. He has been detained at Police Station Shergarhi for further legal proceedings.<\/p>\n

Before shifting to separatist politics, Mir served as the commander-in-chief of JKLF<\/strong> during the early 1990s.<\/p>\n

Shakeel Bakshi Also Detained<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Police also arrested Shakeel Ahmad Bakshi<\/strong> from Bemina. Bakshi founded the Islamic Students League<\/strong> and later joined JKLF before parting ways with the group.<\/p>\n

Case Linked to 1996 Naaz Crossing Clashes<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Police said Mir and Bakshi, along with others, led a large procession<\/strong> in July 1996 while carrying the body of slain militant Hilal Ahmad Beigh<\/strong>. The procession allegedly turned violent at Naaz Crossing<\/strong>, where the mob:<\/p>\n

  • clashed with police,<\/li>\n
  • engaged in stone pelting and rioting,<\/li>\n
  • raised anti-India slogans, and<\/li>\n
  • caused damage to public property.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The then SHO of Shergarhi had attempted to stop the crowd but was met with aggression.<\/p>\n

    • Nayeem Ahmad Khan<\/strong> (in Tihar Jail)<\/li>\n
    • Javed Ahmad Mir<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Shakeel Bakshi<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
