Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah<\/strong> on Tuesday announced the establishment of a memorial in Baisaran<\/strong> to honor the 26 victims<\/strong> of last month\u2019s terror attack near Pahalgam<\/strong>, pledging it would serve as a lasting tribute and a reminder of the innocent lives lost.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have been discussing this from day one \u2013 a memorial will be set up in Baisaran for the 26 innocent lives lost, as a lasting tribute and a reminder that they will never be forgotten,\u201d Abdullah said during an address to travel and tour operators gathered from across the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n He confirmed that the Public Works Department<\/strong> has been granted in-principle approval<\/strong> to proceed with the project following a cabinet meeting held earlier in the day in Pahalgam. The Chief Minister emphasized that public suggestions<\/strong> would be welcomed to ensure the memorial is both \u201cdignified and magnificent<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n Extending gratitude to visiting tour operators, the Chief Minister said,<\/p>\n \u201cI thank each one of you for coming to Pahalgam and supporting the revival of tourism. Many of you stood by us during the most difficult times \u2014 when even locals feared venturing out.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n While acknowledging persistent security challenges<\/strong>, Abdullah underscored the need for stringent safety measures<\/strong>:<\/p>\n \u201cAlthough we do not fully control the security apparatus, I believe what happened should never have happened. We must do everything possible to ensure it never happens again.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n He urged the tourism industry to maintain transparency with tourists<\/strong>, especially in the wake of the Baisaran incident:<\/p>\n \u201cLet\u2019s not focus on what\u2019s closed, but on what\u2019s open. It’s better to speak the truth than mislead tourists.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n The Chief Minister assured that tourism stakeholders would be fully consulted<\/strong> on all decisions regarding the reopening of tourist destinations.<\/p>\n Speaking about the roadmap for reviving international tourism, Abdullah said that domestic tourism is the foundation<\/strong> for global tourist interest.<\/p>\n \u201cOur experience shows that international tourists return after domestic footfall increases. The first sign of normalcy is when school children and families start visiting again. Once that momentum builds, global interest follows.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n The gathering saw participation from major travel bodies and agencies including Raja Rani Travels, Heena Travels, Veena World, KK Tours, Thomas Cook<\/strong>, and associations like TAFI, ADTOI, ETAA, and OTOAI<\/strong>.
