The Congress party launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/strong> on Tuesday, accusing him of indulging in \u201cNehru-bashing\u201d even on Jawaharlal Nehru\u2019s 61st death anniversary<\/strong>, while remaining silent on pressing national security and diplomatic issues, including the halt of Operation Sindoor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh<\/strong> accused the Prime Minister of being a \u201cmaster distorian\u201d and attempting to divert public attention<\/strong> from issues such as cross-border terrorism and India\u2019s foreign policy setbacks.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven on Nehru\u2019s death anniversary, the nation\u2019s supreme (mis)leader and master distorian is active in Nehru-bashing. This is a pathetic attempt at diverting attention from many serious issues confronting us today,\u201d Ramesh posted on X (formerly Twitter).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Questions on Operation Sindoor and US Remarks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Ramesh questioned the Prime Minister\u2019s continued silence<\/strong> over eight statements<\/strong> made by US President Donald Trump<\/strong> in 11 days about the India-Pakistan ceasefire<\/strong> that led to the suspension of Operation Sindoor<\/strong>, a military response following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack<\/strong> that killed 26 people, mostly tourists.<\/p>\n

He also demanded answers as to why the terrorists responsible for Pahalgam<\/strong>, who were allegedly involved in earlier attacks in Poonch (December 2023)<\/strong> and Gagangir and Gulmarg (October 2024)<\/strong>, were still at large.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is the PM silent on the deepening military nexus between China and Pakistan \u2014 the same China he gave a clean chit to on June 19, 2020 \u2014 and with whom our trade deficit continues to rise?\u201d he added.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Critique of Modi\u2019s Comments on Nehru<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Ramesh\u2019s remarks came after PM Modi made a veiled reference to Nehru during a speech in Gandhinagar, indirectly blaming him for historical missteps during India\u2019s partition and the first wave of terrorism in Kashmir.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 1947, when Maa Bharti was partitioned, chains should have been broken but hands were severed… A part of Maa Bharti was captured by Pakistan using terrorists in the name of Mujahideen,\u201d Modi said. He suggested that if Sardar Patel\u2019s advice had been heeded, and the Mujahideen crushed early on, 75 years of terrorism could have been avoided.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Congress Defends Nehru\u2019s Legacy<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Earlier, in a tribute post, Ramesh hailed Nehru as the architect of modern India<\/strong>, saying that despite continuous efforts by the BJP-led government to “defame, distort, deny, denigrate, diminish, and demolish”<\/strong> Nehru\u2019s legacy since 2014, the former prime minister remains deeply embedded in India\u2019s democratic foundation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was authoritative without being authoritarian, an outstanding public figure and an even better human being \u2014 reflective, large-hearted, and free of the insecurities we see on full display since May 26, 2014,\u201d Ramesh wrote.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He stressed that Nehru\u2019s commitment to democracy, secularism, scientific temper<\/strong>, and inclusive nationalism<\/strong> remains central to the idea of India.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo reclaim India, we must reclaim Nehru\u2019s vision,\u201d Ramesh added, calling his final will and testament a piece of \u201csparkling prose.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
