Nandan also highlighted that while <strong>innovative technologies<\/strong> are crucial for a low-carbon future, they must be made <strong>accessible<\/strong> to <strong>developing countries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Developing countries<\/strong> need solutions like <strong>clean energy<\/strong> and <strong>carbon removal technologies<\/strong>, but barriers such as <strong>intellectual property rights<\/strong> make it difficult to access these technologies,\u201d Nandan pointed out. She urged that <strong>COP29<\/strong> come up with <strong>practical solutions<\/strong> to make these technologies <strong>affordable<\/strong>, <strong>adaptable<\/strong>, and <strong>relevant<\/strong> for developing nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India further called for <strong>developed countries<\/strong> to address the <strong>massive climate finance gap<\/strong>, which is delaying climate action in the developing world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Trillions of dollars<\/strong> are needed for <strong>clean energy projects<\/strong>, <strong>disaster-resilient infrastructure<\/strong>, and <strong>climate adaptation<\/strong>\u2026 It should be ensured that any deviation from the least-cost development pathways committed by developing countries is fully met through public finance by developed nations,\u201d Nandan said. She added that failing to meet these commitments would place an additional financial burden on developing countries, which are already bearing the disproportionate impacts of <strong>climate change<\/strong>, despite not being the main contributors to the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India also raised strong objections to <strong>unilateral trade measures<\/strong> such as the <strong>European Union\u2019s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)<\/strong>, arguing that they unfairly shift the costs of climate action onto poorer nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese measures hinder <strong>international cooperation<\/strong> and impose additional financial burdens on developing countries,\u201d Nandan warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman<\/strong> had also criticized the <strong>CBAM<\/strong> last month, calling it \u201c<strong>unilateral and arbitrary<\/strong>,\u201d and said such measures could harm India\u2019s industries and disrupt the <strong>balance in international trade<\/strong>.
