Despite recording its best air quality in eight years on Diwali day, with a 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 218 at 4 pm, pollution levels escalated due to firecracker bursting continuing late into the night amid low temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 7 am, the AQI reached 275, categorizing it as &#8220;poor.&#8221; Some areas, including Shadipur (315), Ayanagar (311), Lodhi Road (308), Pusa (355), and Jahangirpuri (333), experienced pollution levels entering the &#8220;very poor&#8221; category. PM2.5 concentration, a fine particulate matter harmful to the respiratory system, exceeded the safe limit by six to seven times in these areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firecracker bursting resulted in PM2.5 concentrations exceeding 1,000 micrograms per cubic meter in places like Okhla and Jahangirpuri during the early morning hours. Compared to previous years, Delhi recorded an AQI of 312 on Diwali last year, 382 in 2021, 414 in 2020, 337 in 2019, 281 in 2018, 319 in 2017, and 431 in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day-after-Diwali AQI for Delhi stood at 360 in 2015; 445 in 2016; 403 in 2017; 390 in 2018; 368 in 2019; 435 in 2020, 462 in 2021, and 303 in 2022. Despite clear skies and abundant sunshine on Saturday and Sunday, air quality deteriorated due to post-Diwali pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delhi had implemented a comprehensive ban on the manufacture, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers within the city, following the practice of the past three years. The Decision Support System estimated that stubble burning in neighboring states, especially Punjab and Haryana, contributed to 35% of PM2.5 pollution in Delhi on Sunday.
