New Delhi, August 22 –<\/strong> In response to the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, the Centre is set to dispatch approximately 20-22 fresh companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to the region. These additional units will supplement the existing presence of about 125 CAPF companies already stationed in Manipur since the outbreak of violence in early May, according to official sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deployment of these CAPF companies marks the initial phase of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen the security framework in Manipur. Comprising personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Border Security Force (BSF), and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), these units are being relocated from their duties safeguarding the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage in Jammu and Kashmir, which is concluding shortly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further augmenting the security arrangement, an estimated 10-15 additional companies, originally assigned to Amarnath Yatra protection, are also anticipated to be redeployed to Manipur at a later stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move follows the recent suspension of the Amarnath Yatra from August 23 due to reduced pilgrim numbers and the necessity for track restoration work. While the traditional Pahalgam route for the ‘Chari Mubarak’ will proceed as planned, the pilgrimage itself is temporarily suspended until August 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled for September 9-10, which India is hosting in the national capital, New Delhi, approximately 20 CAPF companies withdrawn from Amarnath Yatra duties are expected to be incorporated into the security setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the CAPFs are faced with a demanding timeline, the upcoming months will see their involvement in various security operations. With an estimated requirement of nearly 300 companies for the upcoming assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Mizoram, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will work closely with the Election Commission of India to determine the final number of CAPF units needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation in Manipur escalated in May following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ protesting the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status by the Meitei community. Subsequent ethnic clashes have resulted in more than 160 fatalities and numerous injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
