The Indian Railways will be a 100 percent electricity-driven rail \nnetwork in the next four to five years, making it the largest such \nnetwork in the world, Union minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday. \nSpeaking at the 8th World Energy Policy Summit here, Goyal said Railways\n was rapidly moving towards electrification of its entire network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are already about 55 percent run by electric traction. In the \nnext 4-5 years, we expect to be a 100 per cent electric-driven rail \nnetwork, the largest such network in the world,\u201d the Railway minister \nsaid. Goyal added that the government has tried to bring several \ninitiatives to promote investments in the energy sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAll the power generating companies will also now be eligible for the\n lower 15% income tax rate for all the new investments that come in the \nsector,\u201d he said. By 2030, Railways will invest in 20 GW solar power \ngeneration, which will effectively make it a \u201cnet-zero railway\u201d, Goyal \nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis will give a message to other countries to also consider how \nthey can go for electrification,\u201d he added. Stating that India was \ncommitted to energy transition, Goyal said this was monitored at the \nhighest level to ensure that the country was a part of the global effort\n to make the world a better place to live in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn terms of coal, we are very conscious of our obligations to reduce\n world energy emission levels. No new plant has been approved in the \nlast six years,\u201d he said. Goyal also said that the transition from the \nincandescent bulbs to LED bulbs has helped reduce over eight crore tons \nof carbon dioxide every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGetting out of the traditional cooking methods which included \nfirewood and coal, and moving to the gas economy has been a very \nambitious and successful programme of the government which has \nsignificantly contributed to reducing the pollution levels,\u201d he said. \nGoyal also hailed the Swachh Bharat programme and said that it had an \nimpact on the levels of emissions and the level of environmental \ndegradation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
