Hyderabad Cybercrime Police Arrest Software Employee for Defamation

Hyderabad Cybercrime Police arrested a 30-year-old software employee on charges of creating a fake Instagram account to defame a woman by posting abusive and sexually explicit comments. This incident occurred in Kachiguda, highlighting a concerning trend in online harassment.

According to V Aravind Babu, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cyber Crimes, the accused targeted a woman who is a politically exposed person. In October 2025, he allegedly created this fake profile to post objectionable comments about her, specifically on a video that originally appeared on the “Pura Local” Instagram channel.

The woman’s complaint led to police action, resulting in a case being registered under various sections of the Information Technology Act. Specifically, they cited Sections 66(D) and 67, along with Sections 79 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police investigations revealed that the accused employed the fake account deliberately to hide his identity while posting offensive content aimed at defaming and harassing the complainant. As part of the investigation, authorities seized one mobile phone from the suspect, which may contain vital evidence.

Cybercrime experts have expressed serious concerns over the increasing instances of online abuse. They have urged victims to promptly report such incidents to law enforcement. The Hyderabad police issued guidelines, advising individuals to take screenshots of abusive profiles, comments, and timestamps before blocking or reporting these accounts. Such information can prove crucial as evidence in legal proceedings.

The Cybercrime unit further advised social media users to verify unknown accounts and to refrain from sharing or commenting on unverified or potentially inflammatory content. This advice comes as part of broader efforts to curb online harassment and protect individuals from identity theft and defamation.
