Assam’s Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, and Charaideo districts continue to struggle with severe flooding, affecting 1.92 lakh people as the death toll rises to 82. This grim toll comes after two new fatalities were reported on Saturday. Relief operations are ongoing as multiple agencies respond to the crisis.
The flood situation shows signs of improvement compared to Thursday, when the disaster impacted over two lakh individuals across eight districts. However, critical flooding persists in the Dikhow and Dhansiri rivers, posing serious threats to community safety in Sivasagar and Numaligarh.
Authorities shelter approximately 13,000 people in 54 relief camps, while 26 distribution centers cater to around 5,384 individuals with essential supplies. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are actively engaged in relief measures, ensuring that impacted communities receive necessary support.
In response to the devastation, the Assam government plans to approach insurance companies and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs). The aim is to expedite claim settlements and offer a moratorium to customers affected by the floods. Swift damage assessments will facilitate rapid disbursement of funds for repairs.
New fatalities highlight the ongoing crisis, with the latest reports indicating victims from Sivasagar and Charaideo districts. The impacts of flooding remain severe, with Charaideo recording 77,456 affected individuals, Sivasagar around 63,492, and Jorhat 34,067.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a cabinet meeting on August 5 to coordinate with insurance firms for quicker claims related to damaged vehicles, livestock, and property. Additionally, the government aims to establish a six-month moratorium for flood-affected borrowers from key districts, following deliberations with the State Level Bankers’ Committee.
Relief measures focus on the worst-impacted districts: Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat. Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the government’s commitment to the welfare of every affected family. In a recent social media update, he revealed that over ₹41 crore has been approved under the PM Surya Ghar scheme to support 9,289 beneficiaries within these areas.
Sarma directed the Power Department to expedite the transfer of funds directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts by Tuesday, reinforcing the administration’s dedication to effective disaster response. The government’s proactive approach seeks to alleviate the burdens faced by those affected by the floods.
