Polling for 43 assembly seats in Jharkhand is underway today, as voters head to the polls in the first phase of the state’s legislative elections. A total of 683 candidates, including former Chief Minister Champai Soren and former Member of Parliament Geeta Kora, are contesting for the available seats.
Voting began at 7 AM in 15 districts and will continue until 5 PM. However, in 950 booths, the voting process will conclude at 4 PM. Voters who are in the queue by that time will still be allowed to cast their ballots, an official confirmed. Long queues were seen at several polling stations early in the morning, as people came out in large numbers to exercise their right to vote.
Governor and CM Urge Voters to Participate
Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar was among the first to cast his vote at the ATI polling booth in Ranchi. After voting, he urged the public to participate actively in the electoral process, calling it “a festival of democracy.” He also urged voters to cast their votes early, emphasizing, “First vote, then refreshments!”
Chief Minister Hemant Soren, whose JMM-led coalition is seeking to retain power, also appealed for the support of the electorate. In a post on social media platform X, he said, “If you like our work, please support us. I promise to accomplish 10 years of work in the next 5 years so that no one can stop our pace of progress.”
Electoral Contest: BJP vs. JMM-led Coalition
The first phase of the elections is witnessing a fierce battle between the ruling JMM-led coalition and the opposition BJP. The JMM is relying on its welfare schemes, including the Maiyan Samman Yojna, to win over voters, while the BJP is campaigning with an aggressive Hindutva agenda and focusing on issues such as alleged corruption by the current government and infiltration from neighboring countries.
Top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, have held several rallies attacking the JMM-led coalition on corruption charges. BJP President JP Nadda has also been vocal about the party’s stance.
On the other side, the INDIA bloc, including Congress, has countered BJP’s allegations, accusing the party of misusing central agencies such as the ED, CBI, and Income Tax Department against opposition leaders. Senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, have highlighted the ruling coalition’s welfare schemes and the alleged suppression of tribal voices.
Voter Turnout and Security Arrangements
With 1.37 crore voters eligible to cast their ballots in this phase, the election is witnessing significant participation. A total of 683 candidates, including 609 men, 73 women, and one third-gender person, are vying for seats across 43 constituencies. Among these, 17 seats are reserved for general candidates, 20 for Scheduled Tribes (STs), and 6 for Scheduled Castes (SCs).
A total of 15,344 polling stations have been set up for this phase of the election. Chief Electoral Officer K Ravi Kumar confirmed that all arrangements have been made, and polling personnel have been deployed at their respective stations. Mock polls commenced at 5.30 AM to ensure smooth operations.
Notably, the responsibility for conducting the election at 1,152 polling stations will be entrusted to women personnel, while 24 booths will be manned by differently-abled individuals, reflecting the state’s commitment to inclusivity.
In the lead-up to the election, authorities have seized illegal cash and materials worth Rs 208.78 crore as part of efforts to ensure a free and fair election. The enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct has led to the registration of 58 cases of violation, with Garhwa district accounting for the highest number of 29 cases.
Key Contests to Watch
As the election progresses, some key seats are drawing attention. Former CM Champai Soren, now contesting on a BJP ticket from Seraikela, faces a tough challenge from JMM candidate Ganesh Mahli. In Jagannathpur, BJP’s Geeta Kora, wife of former CM Madhu Koda, will lock horns with Congress’ Sona Ram Sinku. Another significant contest is in Lohardaga, where Congress veteran Rameshwar Oraon will battle AJSU’s Shanti Bhagat.
In Jamshedpur (West), JD(U) candidate Saryu Roy is contesting against Congress’ Banna Gupta. These contests are seen as crucial for both the ruling coalition and opposition as they look to secure key seats in the state assembly.
Looking Ahead
The second phase of elections will take place on November 20, while the counting of votes will occur on November 23. The 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections saw a close contest, with the JMM securing 30 seats and the BJP winning 25 seats, down from 37 in 2014. The JMM-Congress-RJD alliance went on to form the government with a total of 47 seats.
Currently, the Jharkhand Assembly has 74 seats, with the JMM-led coalition holding a majority with 26 seats from JMM, 17 from Congress, and one from RJD. The outcome of this election will be closely watched, as both alliances seek to strengthen their position in the state.
