New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court until June 1 in connection with the excise policy scam. The apex court ruled that Kejriwal must surrender to authorities on June 2.
The decision came from the Supreme Court bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, considering the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Despite objections from the Enforcement Directorate, the court approved Kejriwal’s bail.
Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was arrested by the ED on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case related to the now-defunct excise policy. Currently, he is held in Tihar jail under judicial custody.
During the proceedings, the Supreme Court bench had earlier indicated its inclination to grant interim bail to Kejriwal to allow him to campaign for the election. However, it emphasized that he would be barred from performing any official duties as the chief minister if granted bail. Initially, Kejriwal’s counsel, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, opposed the bail, but later consented to it.
